Many people prefer to avoid ingredients that aren’t a natural or necessary part of any dog’s diet. Some animals are intolerant or allergic to ingredients such as soy and corn. The most common dog allergy is beef. Other top offenders are dairy, wheat, chicken, lamb, pork, fish, and eggs. Dogs can develop intolerances and allergies at any time and often have problems with more than one ingredient. For these and other reasons, it’s important to pay attention to your dog’s reaction to any new food or treat you introduce. Making your own treats has the added benefit of controlling the ingredients and where they come from.

Peanut Butter & Blueberry CookiesNatural Dog Treat Recipe

Dogs love peanut butter, and blueberries are also good for your dog, making this the perfect treat for your pup! All the antioxidants, fiber and phytochemicals blueberries boast provide the same benefits for your dog's body that they give yours. These cookies are a great way to sneak some fish oil into your dog’s diet as well, which improves your dog’s coat, making it shiny, soft, and healthier.

You can usually find organic peanut butter at your grocery store. Many commercial brands of peanut butter have unhealthy hydrogenated oils and additives. Better yet, make your own peanut butter using raw peanuts and peanut oil, and processing the mixture in your food processor.

Ingredients:

2 Cups of Wheat Flour (White if your dog as wheat allergies)
1 Cup of Rolled Oats
1/3 Cup of Smooth Peanut Butter
1/2 Cup of Fresh Blueberries
1 Tablespoon of Honey
1/2 Tablespoon of Fish Oil
1 1/2 Cups of Water

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

1. Mix the flour and oats together in a large mixing bowl. Pour in one cup of water and blend until smooth. Add in the peanut butter, blueberries, honey, and fish oil and mix until all the ingredients are well blended.
2. Slowly add the water until the mixture has a thick and doughy consistency.
Lightly flour a cooking surface. Roll the dough onto the cooking surface to create a 1/4 inch thick sheet. If the dough is too sticky to roll, slowly pad more flour onto the dough ball.
3. Use a cookie cutter to create shapes. Place the cookies onto a baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes.

Allow to cool completely before feeding.
