Keeping Your Doggy Focused During Walks!

When going for walks with your dog, is his attention laser-focused…on everything? Is your dog easily – and aimlessly – distracted by the little things? A passing pooch, a butterfly, or a new scent will keep your walk from going in one direction to all over the place. If you’ve found your dog is easily distracted during your strolls, here are a few things to do to re-focus their minds:
1) Treat them! Positive reinforcement is the best way to train your pooch, and staying focused during a walk is no different. Cesar Millan points out that by keeping a treat handy, you can keep your pooch on the straight and narrow path, as our pooches are generally distracted by familiar scents. Simply carry the treats, let them have a sniff just embarking on your walk, and reward them with a treat the first 10-15 ft, and then every five feet afterwards.
2) Keep them sitting! One fine way to keep your dog focused is to train them to sit. As pointed out by Advisor, training your pooch to sit every time you stop during a walk is a great way to keep them under control.
3) Break a sweat BEFORE walking! That’s right – may sound redundant or counter intuitive, but getting your dog to release some energy with a quick moment of play before walking could do wonders to relax and refocus his attention, according to Posititively.
And don’t forget to check if your dog needs to use the bathroom BEFORE going on a walk, or else you’ll have your hands full with a used poop bag! DoggieLawn is available to everyone who wants to make their K-9 bathroom breaks easy and clean! Our dog sod potty patches will keep him indoors for an easy, no-mess potty solution. Simply place your dog sod litter box inside your apartment for an outdoor-free experience. Your outdoor dog litter box can easily be used indoors, and picking up your dog’s potty is a breeze since it’s all contained on the dog litter box. We also carry poop baggies that come in a variety of colours and fun patterns to match your stylish pooch!
