But there’s one very important thing you still need to do before bringing home your new pooch, and that is to puppy proof your place. It’s time to sweep through your residence and scrub out anything that would potentially be harmful to your dog, which include:
1) Loose wires! Remove these potentially dangerous chords out of sight and out of mind by bundling them away and completely out of reach.
2) Hazards come in all sizes: Peteducation.com points out to remove small items that include earrings, paper clips, and other tiny items you might ordinarily overlook. These items present a choking hazard.
3) Watch the stairs! The same website recommends keeping your pooches away from stairwells with a baby gate.
4) Liquids: Cesar Millan recommends keeping soaps out of reach, as well as any liquids in the garage used for cars – gasoline, antifreeze, oil, etc. The website also similarly recommends keeping any and all liquids that are bottled up high and out of reach. Double check all bottles are secure as well.
5) Helpful tips: Cesar Millan suggests installing child proof latches onto cupboards and wardrobes that you believe can be accessible to your pooch. Take note of any plants in or around the house as well, as some can be poisonous if ingested by your dog. Hillspet.com notes plants such as daffodils, lily, azalea, mistletoe, and poinsettia, among others, should be kept away from your animal.
