Stray dogs can be rescued from the side of the road, but in order for you to safely approach the pooch, it’s best to ascertain how he or she is behaving.
If you are able to safely pull over and the dog happily makes its way over to you, it may be worth helping the canine out, according to Rover.com. But the website also reminds that dogs can act dangerously, in which case it is important to think of your own safety instead of approaching the pooch.
The Humane Society similarly reminds to proceed with caution, as animals can act unpredictably. Use a calming and soothing voice if you decide to approach the pooch, adds the Humane Society. And if you’re uncomfortable letting the dog inside your car, contact Animal Control.
Rather than exposing yourself to being bitten as you drive the dog, the website recommends to instead call Animal Control. Driving with an unknown animal can be very risky.
Also notice any tags with contact information and if you’re able to safely approach the dog to collect the information, call the owner up, according to Rover.com.
Cesar Milan also suggests remembering where the dog is located if it’s too dangerous to abruptly pull over. You can use this information to call Animal Control and notify them of where the dog is at.
If you do feel the situation is secure and the dog be safely driven, take them to an animal shelter, according to the Humane Society. But always remember that your safety comes first when taking a dog under your wing! Be careful and proceed with caution.
