Few things in life are quite as exciting as a new puppy. Welcoming a fresh-faced new pup into your home is a unique joy, and it's the start of many more years of laughter and fun with your furry new friend. After housetraining (which, by the way, our dog grass mats can help with), one of the first things a dog owner wants to do is teach their new puppy to sit – but many find this isn't as easy as it may seem. Follow this guide and your pup will be sitting in no time!
How to Train a Dog to Sit
Before getting started, you'll need a few things. Firstly, you need treats – these are the most effective way to get your dog's attention and reward them for the behavior you want (which, in this case, is sitting). Because you'll give your puppy a lot of treats during the session, make sure they're very small. You'll also need a good training environment, which is anywhere your pup feels comfortable that's also relatively distraction-free. Training indoors is generally a better idea, as there are less distractions than there are outdoors. Also keep in mind that dogs – especially puppies – have short attention spans. Train in small time increments, and don't be afraid to give your dog a break if they start getting distracted!
To start a training session, stand directly in front of your pup and show him the treat so he knows you have it, but keep it out of reach. Holding onto the treat firmly so your dog can't grab it from you, hold it just above her head and move it towards her tail. Firmly say the command "sit" as you do this. As he follows the treat with his nose, he should sit down so he can properly reach the treat. As soon as your dog sits, immediately praise her by giving her the treat and using a positive tone of voice.
The next steps are a little more boring – from here, training simply entails repeating the process again and again. Aim for training sessions of about 10 minutes, and try to do two or three sessions a day. It'll take your puppy a week or two to fully learn to associate the command with the action, but once they're trained, they'll know the trick forever!
