When it comes to training a dog, it's hard to go it alone. Even experienced pet owners can have trouble during the early stages of training, and sometimes small habits you may not even notice are hindering your training efforts. At DoggieLawn, our real dog grass mats are designed to make the process easier – but some outside knowledge goes a long way. Here are a few of our favorite books for training your dog.

Cesar's Way – Cesar Millan

If you're an animal enthusiast, you've probably heard the name Cesar Millan before – and for good reason. Cesar is a veritable dog whisperer, turning even unruly pups into well-behaved, good-mannered pooches. While he has many books, this is a good one for getting an overview of his approach to training a dog, helping to provide a framework so you can successfully train your own.

The Art of Raising a Puppy – The Monks of New Skete

If anyone is going to lift raising a puppy to the level of an art, it's the Monks of New Skete. They've been raising and training German Shepherds for decades, and this book takes a deep dive into the experience and methods they've gained after their many years of experience. For new dog owners and anyone who's starting the training process with a puppy, this book is an indispensable resource.

Dog Training for Dummies

We'd be remiss if we left this one out. Dog Training for Dummies covers all the basics of training a dog, starting at the very beginning with the most basic concepts – as is customary for the For Dummies franchise. This book will take you from the earliest stages of dog training like bringing your pup home all the way through learning cool tricks after your dog is well-trained. It's an excellent reference to have throughout the training process.

101 Dog Tricks – Kyra Sundance & Chalcy

If you've already gotten the basics of training down or you're welcoming a previously trained dog into your home, this is a great book for fun activities that let you and your dog bond while learning some cool new tricks. The book covers a wide variety of tricks, hitting everything from classic commands like sit and stay to more complex tricks like getting a beer out of the fridge (yes, you read that right). For owners looking to expand their training repertoire after moving on from the basics, this is a great next step.

The Other End of the Leash – Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D

This book takes a unique perspective on the subject of training. Instead of focusing only on the dog's behavior, McConnell looks at the behavior of the owner – and finds that often, subtle habits and behaviors can sabotage our training efforts. While not a training manual in the traditional sense, this is an excellent companion for a more traditional dog training book, giving a helpful and often-needed supplemental perspective.

Decoding Your Dog – American College of Veterinary Behaviorists

This book takes a scientific approach to dog training, using research-backed insights to explain how dogs learn. Offering a powerful framework for understanding canine learning, this title is excellent for better understanding your pup and finding healthier, more effective ways to train your pooch. One of the less traditional insights offered by this scientific approach? One vet in the book suggests setting up a camera to see what your pup does when you're not around.

Train Your Dog with Indoor Pet Grass from DoggieLawn

Training can be a difficult process, but it's important to recognize that sometimes, it's just not the dog's fault. Even for a human, the idea of foregoing trips to the bathroom all day can be difficult – and now imagine how hard it is for a puppy with such a small bladder! Our indoor and dog patio potties are designed to help prevent accidents, keep your dog happier, and improve the training process, making things easier for both you and your furry friend. Made from real grass with a sanitary soil-less design, they're the perfect training companion for any size dog.
