November is Pet Diabetes Month. Yes, not even our furry friends are safe from this common disease! According to PetDiabetesMonth.com, 1 in 100 to 1 in 500 dogs becomes diabetic during their life. But for those of us unfamiliar with this affliction, what is it?

Diabetes occurs as the result of an insulin shortage or inability to effectively process the chemical, thereby raising glucose levels in the blood stream.

It turns out there are factors that could help determine whether or not your pooch is at risk of becoming diabetic, according to The Bark. Certain breeds, such as mixed breeds, are more likely to become diabetic. Also, dogs in their mid to elderly age have a higher likelihood of developing the disease, the website adds.

There are a variety of ways to treat Diabetes. DoggieLawn Explores: Pet Diabetes Month

As with humans, keeping a slim weight, and drinking plenty of water are key, according to Pets.WebMD.com. Maintaining an active lifestyle is critical as well, but for those times when taking your pooch out for an outdoor potty break is not possible, look no further than DoggieLawn.
